What I'm Looking at Today: Topkapi

What can top a rock crystal bucket filled with emeralds the size of plums? solid gold thrones and endless diamonds and pearls? how can anything top that? and then you walk around the corner from the treasury and you enter a world so dreamy that it could only be make believe, unsustainable....coming from a western perspective where the Renaissance and the Vetruvian ideal, Alberti's grid and Palladio's volumes are sacred........ to encounter the eastern sensibilities of the Topkapi can overwhelm the senses. It's the sense of balance, the sheer modernity of the spaces, if you were to strip all ornament you'd swear these pavilions are MOD....but we're not interested in any of that right now....just in impressions of past grandeur, glories gone by and an echo of something lost long ago....

So I will just post some pictures of a few pavilions and their decorative details.

Topkapi....make and appointment.
