Santa Maria della Scala

This is one of the oldest hospitals in the world and a true repository of great art. You MUST see this when you are in Siena. It is on so many levels and so labyrinthine that at one point we were fearful that we wouldn't find our way out. There are basements, sub basements, sub sub basements, secret chapels that look as if vampires will come out to get you at any moment. It's beautiful and frightening at the same time. Below are non-scary pics I could smuggle out.

The church of Santa Maria della Scala

From the church to the museum....this is not an entrance, but they have the doors open to entice you.....and it worked. we had no idea of how enormous this complex is.

One of the chapels

Vestiges of paint.

Paintings mostly done by Domenico di Bartolo

The Sala Pellegrinaio

There are so many rooms in this museum, most [ actually all ] are dark and really un-photographable, all are great. You will leave this place in awe and in love with Sienese art....
